Pastel Pink

About the Item

Kristalova is best known for her figurative ceramic sculptures that incorporate aspects of the human body and elements of nature. Across her oeuvre, she explores transition as a stage essential to both human and ecological life. Crafted in the artist’s secluded studio in Sweden, Kristalova’s uncanny work simultaneously exude innocence, horror, and tension, often conjuring an awkward but undeniable presence. Building a world that bridges humanity, ecology, and fantasy, Kristalova emphasizes the omnipresence of change throughout all forms of life.

  • Fading pink (#3)
    By Hernan Bas
    Located in New York, NY
Hernan Bas is best known for his narratively rich scenes that feature a wide-range of references spanning art and literature, popular culture, kitsch, the occult, religion, and mythology. Across his works, Bas seeks to defamiliarize everyday experience through humor, revealing the surreal and absurd lurking beneath the mundane. In conceiving this flamingo sculpture series, Bas was inspired specifically by the 19th century novel ‘Against Nature’ by Joris-Karl Huysmans. In the novel, the main character, an astute dandy of epic proportions, decides to cover a pet tortoise's shell with ornate jewels in order to see how the light would glimmer on it as it slowly treaded across his carpets. Bas imagined a fictional character of his own, a "Florida Dandy," who would naturally want bright pink flamingos as pets. The ball and chain keep them from flying away and simultaneously constrain them to a certain territory. . . . Fading pink (#3), 2016-2017 resin, feathers, galvanized metal buoy...

  • "You Silly Billy", Figurative Ceramic Sculpture, Porcelain, Glaze, Underglaze
    By Kyungmin Park
    Located in St. Louis, MO
Kyungmin Park is a figurative ceramic sculptor drawing inspiration from childlike perspectives. Contrasting the darker emotions and restricted psyche of adulthood with the boundless consciousness of children, Kyungmin’s sculptures confront the view with uncomfortable juxtapositions, encouraging reflection upon personal expectations and narratives. Kyungmin largely uses handbuilding techniques to construct her figures out of porcelain, a material she prefers for its ability to contrast starkly with bright and colorful decoration. Originally from South Korea, Kyungmin earned her MFA in Ceramics from the University of Georgia in 2012 and her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2008. Currently, Kyungmin is an Assistant Professor of 3D studio Art at Endicott College in Beverly...
