About

Black/gray Head of a Man Clay Brutalist style sculpture, wood stand signed. Size:18.5 x9x8 Donald Odysseus Mavros was born in New York City on 4 March 1927-2010. He studied in New York and became a ceramic designer, sculptor, painter, and teacher. Above all perhaps, Mavros excelled in abstract ceramic design. Since 1950 Donald Mavros has contributed a great deal towards the advancement of the craft movement in the United States by actively participating in arts and crafts organizations and by teaching ceramics in his studio. He was instrumental in establishing the ceramic section of the New School for Social Research Art School in 1960. Mavros received several awards in over one hundred personal and group exhibitions. He gained national recognition through the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. His book of 1971 entitled Getting Started in Ceramics is a thoughtful guide to this art form's fundamental techniques.
