Dale Dunning
Cloud 1/7 - soft, smooth, calming, human face, white lacquered bronze sculpture

2017

About the Item

Dale Dunning’s contemporary sculptures often use the generic image of the human head as a metaphor for our collective experience. With this table top piece in bronze, the Canadian artist has hand forged an oval head on its side, eyes closed as if at rest. It's a peaceful image enhanced by the neutral palette. Layers of white lacquer and wax have created a smooth, matte and opaque finish. Since ancient times, sculptors have represented the human face and head in their work. Dunning’s intriguing sculptures honour that tradition but are wholly modern in material and form. "The head is universally recognized, easy to identify with. We live in our heads, see, feel, and experience the world in our head. It serves as the foundation upon which I can develop various paths to explore. “ Dale Dunning Dunning holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Mt. Alison University, Dunning studied under Lawren P. Harris (son of Group of Seven member Lawren S. Harris) and George Tiessen. Dunning has exhibited across Canada and his work is held in private, corporate and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, McIntosh Gallery at Western University, Carleton University Art Collection, and the National Library of Canada.
