About the Item

Alejandro Santiago´s art explores the relationship between the physical appearance of our consciousness and what unites us as humans; exploring the relationship between the ethic of art and elemental questions about materials and human nature. Alejandro reflects on life, death, the being and rebirth through various media such as bronze, ceramics, graphics, aquarelle and oil. His most important work is the installation 2501 Migrants, in part funded by the Rockefeller foundation in 2008. 2501 Migrants consist of 2501 bronze figures and is so far the largest Latin American art project. It was first exhibited in Monterrey, Mexico and later on in California, USA. Alejandro Santiago is one of the most internationally acclaimed Mexican artists thanks to his authentic and free style; his choice of colors varies at times from grainy ocres to warm midday colors; his graphics depict horses, women and citizens; his sculptures reflect deep emotions. His oeuvre explores pre-Columbian styles of figuration and modernist relationships between figure, line, and ground. Santiago’s paintings refer to the modernist work of Rufino Tamayo as they explore the possibilities of pure abstraction through ecstatic lines and earthen fields of colors. Alejandro Santiago is born in 1964 in Teococuilco de Marcos Pérez, Oaxaca, a small town in the northern sierra zapoteca. He moved to the city of Oaxaca at age 9 and later on he attends the art school Bellas Artes of the Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez. He studies painting and sculpture. The Taller Rufino Tamayo supported him as part of the project Artistic Development of Young Oaxacaños and Alejandro was able explore working with different graphics such as xylography, linography, serigraphy, lithography and monotype. In 2007, he travelled to the US-Mexican border, he went from Tijuana, Baja California and the valley of Otay, from where he began the long desert sector named the vía crucis. His experience as a migrant is fundamental to his oeuvre. For his hard work he was given a scholarship to work in the US and Europe for 10 years. It was during this time that his notoriety became internationally known since he was featured prominently in several exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, San Francisco and other important cities. Alejandro never forgot his origins and, in 2010, he founded the sculptural space La Telaraña in one of the most dense working-class neighbourhoods of Oaxaca, thus bringing culture and art to the next generation of underprivileged young Oaxaqueños. 2011 the atelier and studio La Calera, dedicated to art and culture, opened its doors in the old neighborhood El Ex-Marquesado to young students of the CEDART Miguel Cabrera and the art school Bellas Artes UABJO. Together with Alcides Fortes he inaugurates 2008 Galería Nudo in San Miguel de Allende. Together they plan various exhibits up until his early death due to a heart attack in 2013. In 2015, Galería Nudo and Alejandro’s son Lucio Santiago organize an homage for Alejandro. Other selected solo exhibits include the following: Alejandro Santiago and Alcides Fortes organize the cross-cultural exhibit Rembrandt y Alejandro Santiago – La parranda imposible (2013), Alcances (2012) and Culpas en Puertas Lacerantes (2012). The project 2501 Migrantes becomes a US-Mexican collaboration between the International Museum Mingei in San Diego, the Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT), the Colegio de la frontera Norte (COLEF) and the artist's’ family in Oaxaca. His most important solo exhibits include Alejandro Santiago – Familias Migrantes (Plaza Juarez in Mexico City 2011), Alejandro Santiago – 2501 Migrantes (Fundación Monterrey 2007), Alejandro Santiago (Monterrey 2007), Alejandro Santiago – 2501 Migrantes (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Oaxaca 2006), Alejandro Santiago – Fragmentos (Museo Casa Diego Rivera, Guanajuato 2005), Alejandro Santiago (Galería Baudoin Lebon, París, Francia, 1994) and Alejandro Santiago (Galería Baudoin Lebon, París, Francia, 1985). Christie’s New York sold Untitled (1993), mixed media painting, for 8’000 US Dollars in 2014. Louis C. Morton Mexico sold Sin título (2013), oil on canvas, for 41’811 US Dollars in 2013.
