About Heather Guidero
Having grown up under the open skies of rural Indiana, surrounded by animals and agriculture, Heather Guidero early on discovered a love for drawing everything in sight. A community arts center class led to her surprising fascination with jewelry and two decades later, she is as enamored with the metalsmithing process as ever. It shows in her masterfully handcrafted collection of contemporary fine jewelry.
Formally trained at RISD, Heather worked as a goldsmith for renowned jewelry company Reinstein/Ross in New York before returning to Providence, Rhode Island to launch her namesake collection in 2005. Her interest in using line to render drawings three-dimensionally results in unique explorations of volume, movement, and pattern that transform into personal and interactive sculpture on the body.
“Settling in at my bench and picking up my favorite antique files is as natural and reflexive as breathing. There's something comforting about the feel of my favorite tools in hand and being able to turn a sheet of metal or length of wire into a piece of jewelry that will be treasured and worn on a regular basis.”
The graphic lines, textures, and patterns of her work are inspired by elements of modernist design, fashion, and urban architecture translated into ethically-sourced gold and silver. Select pieces are accented by brilliant diamonds or colorful gemstones. Innately wearable, Heather’s collection boldly accentuates your personal style, her considerations of natural movement enabling the jewelry to come alive when worn.
Her work has been featured at prominent museums and galleries across the country including the Museum of Art and Design (NYC), DeNovo (Palo Alto, CA), and Jewelerswerk (Washington DC). She also regularly presents new work at wholesale shows such as the American Craft Council Wholesale Show and the Buyers Market of American Craft. Every piece in Heather’s collection is constructed and finished by hand in her Providence studio.

“Using racial conflict as a starting point, I juxtaposes various fibers with a variety of found materials using free form weaving, coiling, knotting, wrapping and jewelry making techniques. Meticulously collected materials, transformed by their collective memory become “social fabric” weaving together contemporary issues and personal narratives.
100-foot extensions of rope, twine, and yarn impeccably wrapped, woven, tied and embellished with recycled beads, ribbon, lace, tape and bottle cap bobbles lures you into my hue-imbued, enmeshed installations symbolizing natural hair. These bold albeit whimsically twisted and locked forms gingerly invite the audience into off the-wall conversations about micro aggressions against black women and their hair.
Community art making is also key to my process. Multi-disciplinary experiences pairing people, food, wine, music and art, create a safe space to explore themes such as equity & inclusion, sustainability and personal wellbeing.”

There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? This particular ceramic was from the collection of Jane and Richard Knight’s Estate. Jane Knight was a famous fiber and textile artist. Richard was a photographer who worked for Eliel Saarinen and Alexander Girard. The Knights and Girard became close friends and it was Girard who gifted “Santa Cruz De Las Huertas Jalisco” to the Knights. Alexander Girard left his personal collection to the Museum of International Folk Art, Santa Fe, NM. The Girards eventually amassed a collection of more than 106,000 objects from across the globe. Their 1978 gift of this collection to the Museum of International Folk art quintupled the size of their collection and prompted the construction of a new wing, which opened in 1982 and houses a mere 10% of the Girard Collection in the permanent exhibition Multiple Visions: A Common Bond, which was designed by Alexander Girard himself. This collection includes numerous multiples and is notable for its great breadth, including traditional arts, popular arts, and paper ephemera. “I believe we should preserve this evidence of the past, not as a pattern for sentimental imitation,” Girard once said, “but as nourishment for the creative spirit of the present.” Indeed, folk art was an important inspiration for Girard’s design work.
