Sarah House
"Fractal" - Contemporary Ceramic Crystal Sculpture

2020

About the Item

Notable New Orleans artist Sarah House's work centers around what she calls "fractals" - occurrences of order in nature, here appearing as crystal forms juxtaposed with a more amorphous, scalloped mass that looks almost as though it has been carved by surf or weather. Check out her mastery of surfaces: the lacquer-shiny facets of the "crystals" next to the abraded, matte "matrix" material. Absolutely striking and attention-getting, a real conversation piece, and sizable so it doesn't get lost on a table top or mantel. House has participated in Artist in Residence programs in Baltimore, Maine, Montana, Hungary, Taiwan, Denmark, Iceland and Chile. She is a Windgate Fellow, a Nyburg Fellow and has been recognized globally for her work, exhibiting across Europe, Asia, and North America. Sarah currently works in her New Orleans studio. Proudly presented by Guy Lyman Fine Art, New Orleans, with our firm guarantee of satisfaction.

Artist's Statement: "Around 30 years ago, not long after I had started painting seriously, I was at a one-man exhibition of the great Brice Marden at the Fort Worth Museum of Modern Art when I visited the annex to get a cocktail. There was one other guy at the small bar table in an otherwise empty room, waiting for his coffee to be handed to him. He turned and dumped half of it down my front. I immediately recognized him as none other than Brice Marden. He apologized profusely, but I stopped him and said: 'No problem: how often is it that Brice Marden dumps coffee on your pants? They're worth more now.' We both had a good laugh. At any rate - I was certainly channeling his early work when I began work on this series. They are made with oil and beeswax on wood panels...
