About

Ryan Sarah Murphy’s creative practice is intuitive and process-driven, generated by the found ephemera of her daily experience. Responding to the latent energy within discarded and repurposed objects, she allows for the material to act as the guide, moving through the development of a piece with no set plan or intended outcome. Her approach to “making” is wholly collaborative, wherein her attention rests soundly on the given material, and the material in turn determines the course of action. The process of collage lies at the foundation of her art making. The impulse to gather, assemble, layer and construct is always present. Found color is an enormous prompt, an irrefutable harbinger of potential forms and possibilities. In the small reliefs made of cardboard and sometimes book covers, she never paints, alters or enhances the natural color of the materials, be it a Nike shoebox or a frozen food carton. Cutting and tearing away any text, logos or product branding, Murphy uses the remaining color fragments as the starting point in constructing new forms. The emergent themes are all rooted in landscape. There is a seemingly incessant drive to find grounding and placement in a widely untethered space, be it the tactile, physical environment or the nebulous interiors of the self. The handling of her chosen (and inherently impermanent) materials speaks to an illusive architectural instinct that embodies dual paths of creation and destruction. Ryan Sarah Murphy is a visual artist living and working in New York. Murphy is a recipient of a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Grant (2014), a Working Artist Grant (2018), and she has held residencies at the I-Park Foundation (East Haddam, CT) and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across the US including: ODETTA (Brooklyn); Platform Gallery (Seattle); Lesley Heller Workspace (NY); Kathryn Markel Fine Arts (NY); Liliana Bloch Gallery (Dallas) and Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT). Ryan’s work has been featured and reviewed in several online and print publications including the New York Times, Artnews, Maake Magazine, Tory Burch Daily, and Embark Magazine. Permanent collections include the Foundation Center (New York) and the Holter Museum of Art (Montana).
