About

Florian Schmidt (*1980 in Raabs, Austria) lives in Berlin and works as an Artistic Associate at the Bauhaus-University, Weimar. He graduated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, and studied also at the University of Fine Art in Hamburg, Germany. Florian Schmidt creates seemingly contradictory artworks that can be described as paintings that are objects or objects that are paintings. What does that mean? He is creating his paintings with elements / left-overs from earlier productions or newly prepared objects, that he finds, respectively constructs in his studio. With these elements, he builds forms and structures that are connected to frames, that allow him to install the final objects on the wall (be they rather flat and thus close to what one could consider painting, be they rather three-dimensional objects that one could describe as reliefs). With these bodies he is exploring the relationship between space, material and color. It is never about images in the sense of one thing depicts another – be it something figurative, be it an abstract form. It is rather about the object as an entity of its own right, a composition with its own value. Also: Schmidt is not using left-overs from his studio in order to act ecologically correct and economically smart, but mainly because he is interested in handing over the composition partly to the element of chance. So, by deciding to use color that he kept from earlier pieces, the new piece is related to his own history. And the same is true for the materials employed, mainly cardboard, wood, sawdust. He is thus working like a city-developer who has to create and live with what is given. “Untitled(concurrent)05” is a work that protrudes 25 cm from the wall and thus pushes the limits of painting very far in the realm of sculpture. With the white frame, that surrounds the painterly parts, Schmidt plays the Sol LeWitt-chord: If seen directly frontal, it seems as if the white frame and structure is just framing the painting and deviding it in several green and blue elements / fields, as if it was a hard-edge painting. Seen, however, from the side, we understand the perspective of the white structure and feel us motivated to move around and experience the work as a three-dimensional thing that needs the movement for its visual understanding. This process is comparable to the understanding of sculptures by Sol LeWitt. Either they are minimal cubes or they are dynamic entities with changing perspectives. Florian Schmidt's works have been shown in numerous international single and group exhibitions: Salon der Gegenwart 2018, Hamburg (G); In-Dis-Appearance, E-Werk, Freiburg i.B. (s); Florian Schmidt, Kunsthalle Krems Factory, Krems (S); How to paint, Super Dakota, Brussels (S); (S)ITUATIONS, L’architecte, le musée et le collectionneur, Musée du Pays de Sarrebourg (G); Abstrakt – Konkret, Parlament, Vienna (S); Faces and Facets: Recent Acquisition, Princeton University Art Museum, Princeton (G); Future and Reality, 5th Beijing International Art Biennale, National Art Museum of China, Beijing (G); Gezeichnet, Niederösterreichisches Landesmuseum, St. Pölten (G).
