About the Item

This mixed media piece is made of rug material with a blue wash over the top. It lays from the wall onto the floor. Artist statement: I employ collage to reflect on the fragmented state of diasporic living in a stateless community. My making process involves gathering and repurposing artifacts from my community such as Kurdish clothes, found rugs, family photographs, and Hot Cheeto bags to explore U.S. commodity culture, bazaars, colonial amnesia, assimilation, and the romantic interpretation of Kurdish resistance songs. I use these materials to draw, paint, cut, screen print, sew, to create discrete objects and larger immersive installations. The flower is a common motif in Kurdish songs and literature. It is also a recurring motif in my own work. Someone who does not have the keys to unlock this generational knowledge would think that these songs are only about love, romance and landscapes. However, like the songs, the patterns and symbols that I abstract from rugs, Kurdish dresses and fabrics often shift from being decorative to redrawing borders, remapping and reconnecting to ancestral land. I reinterpret history by using new symbols to construct new myths, cultures, and languages. The Kurdish dress has taught me everything I know about collage, fashion, and resistance. My work explores the space between the homeland and the host land. The space between a love song and a protest song. Artist Bio: Barwari’s art is influenced by her family histories, being born in the U.S.., and spending her adolescent years in Duhok, Kurdistan. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art from Tennessee State University in 2019 and is a 2022 MFA candidate at the University of Tennessee Knoxville. Barwari’s expansive practice includes installations; performances; co-hosting a podcast; collecting and repurposing artifacts from a larger community such as photos, rugs, fabrics, and Kurdish dresses; and an online shop that supplies apparel and art internationally. Referencing Kurdish history, her work explores the space between the homeland and the host land. This space is translated through repurposed mixed media that draws connections to U.S commodity culture, the mise-en-scéne of bazaars, colonial amnesia, assimilation, and the romantic interpretation of Kurdish resistance songs. She has exhibited in numerous locations such as Kurdistan’s first Fashion Week (2018) in Erbil, Kurdistan region of Iraq, the Frist Art Museum (2019), the University of Michigan (2019), Sugar Gallery (2019) in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Zg Gallery (2020) in Chicago, 21c Museum Hotel (2021) in Nashville, TN.
