Travel between 10 and 4 original poster c.1943

c.1943

About the Item

Printed for H.M Stationary Office, c.1943 If your journey is REALLY necessary and you can choose your times… travel between 10 and 4 Issued by the Ministry of War Transport and the Ministry of Labour and National Service 18×75 cm (7″ x 30″) in unissued condition. This poster is an attractive piece of typography against a bright red background and was intended to be displayed in railway carriages. Rationing did not only apply to food. Public transport was in limited supply too, so those making inessential journeys such as housewives were discouraged from travel. Those who could choose the time of their journey were encouraged to travel outside the rush hour. The “Is your journey really necessary” campaign began early in the war to discourage casual travel. By 1943 the vagaries of the distribution of rationed food had encouraged housewives to use the train to go shopping and this poster is a product of that campaign. It was accompanied by a short film shown in news cinemas in which women with parcels were seen to obstruct the essential war workers. We have been unable to trace another copy of this poster in this shape. Both the National Railway Museum and the IWM hold a double crown (30 x 20″) version of the poster, though printed by J Weiner, London.

Hans Schleger 'Zero' (1898-1976) London Transport Coach Stop Poster Screenprint poster c. 1970 16x17.8 cm Printed for London Transport These posters were designed to be used as temporary stops when the usual stop required amendment for instance owing to road works or similar events. Printed on paper they were designed to be posted up at the alternative site, possibly over a different sort of stop (bus stop, coach stop, request stop, etc.). Working with Edward Johnson's special typeface created for London Transport, Hans Schleger - or Zero as he signed himself - adopted the famous roundel used by London Underground for use at Bus Stops. Born in Germany, Schleger was an influential graphic designer. After serving during the First World War, he studied at the Berlin Kunstgewerbeschule, being taught by Emil Orlik. The same year Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus at Weimar and Schleger learned the same principles of breaking down the barriers between architecture, design, fine art and craft. A firm believer in the Bauhaus principles of simplicity in design and reduction to essentials, these may be seen in the clean lines of the roundel. In 1924 he moved to New York, applying Modernism to American advertising, and then returned to Berlin in 1929 working for the British advertising agency Crawfords, where he met Edward McKnight Kauffer who introduced him to Jack Beddington the head of advertising at Shell Mex...
