Little Harbour
By Hiroshi Yoshida
Located in Burbank, CA
Original handmade Japanese woodblock print. "Little Harbour". View of moored boats framed by a large and ancient pine tree. Provenance: Purchased directly from the Yoshida Family, this work has never been circulated and has fresh, unfaded colors. Signed by the artist in pencil and in brush. Sealed "jizuri" (self-printed). Hiroshi Yoshida began his career as a painter, and first traveled to America in 1899, when he sold paintings to clients that included Charles Lang Freer, to whom he sold a painting of a cherry tree that is now at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Yoshida became a printmaker in the 1920s as a way for the rising middle class to be able to purchase fine artworks that he created as multiples via the ancient woodlblock printing tradition of Japan. Yoshida also curated the famous 1930 Toledo Museum circuit exhibition of 370 shin hanga prints that included many of his own works. He is considered one of the greatest printmaking Japanese landscape artists...
