Realist Prints and Multiples

REALIST STYLE

Realist art attempts to portray its subject matter without artifice. Similar to naturalism, authentic realist paintings and prints see an integration of true-to-life colors, meticulous detail and linear perspectives for accurate portrayals of the world.

Work that involves illusionistic techniques of realism dates back to the classical world, such as the deceptive trompe l’oeil used since ancient Greece. Art like this became especially popular in the 17th century when Dutch artists like Evert Collier painted objects that appeared real enough to touch. Realism as an artistic movement, however, usually refers to 19th-century French realist artists such as Honoré Daumier exploring social and political issues in biting lithographic prints, while the likes of Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet painting people — particularly the working class — with all their imperfections, navigating everyday urban life. This was a response to the dominant academic art tradition that favored grand paintings of myth and history.

By the turn of the 20th century, European artists, such as the Pre-Raphaelites, were experimenting with nearly photographic realism in their work, as seen in the attention to every botanical attribute of the flowers surrounding the drowned Ophelia painted by English artist John Everett Millais.

Although abstraction was the guiding style of 20th-century art, the realism trend in American modern art endured in Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth and other artists’ depictions of the complexities of the human experience. In the late 1960s, Photorealism emerged with artists like Chuck Close and Richard Estes giving their paintings the precision of a frame of film.

Contemporary artists such as Jordan Casteel, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Aliza Nisenbaum are now using the unvarnished realist approach for honest representations of people and their worlds. Alongside traditional mediums, technology such as virtual reality, artificial intelligence and immersive installations are helping artists create new sensations of realism in art.

Petra, The Upper or Eastern Valley: 19th C. Hand-colored Roberts Lithograph
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored lithograph entitled "Petra, Shewing the Upper or Eastern End of the Valley" by David Roberts, from his Egypt, The Holy Land and Nubia volumes of the large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1842. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This is one of Roberts' most famous and collectible works. The scene captures a view of the magnificent ruins of Petra in what is Jordan today, as it appeared on March 8, 1839, on the day of Roberts' visit. Multiple Arab men are approaching Petra; some on foot and others riding camels. They are dressed in their colorful local costumes. Roberts' signature and hand written date are reproduced in the plate on the left. This hand-colored lithograph is printed on wove paper with wide margins. There is some loss of color in the text in the title and a faint dark curvilinear area in the upper right. The print is otherwise in very good condition. It is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a tan mat. It is glazed with UV protected conservation glass. All framing materials used are archival museum quality. The frame measures 23.5" high and 30.5" wide. There are two additional iconic David Roberts hand-colored lithographs for sale on 1stdibs that are matted and framed in identical styles, although slightly different sizes. They are scenes of Approach of Simoon, Desert of Gizeh and the Citadel of Cairo. They can be viewed by typing their reference #'s, LU1173211955452 and LU1173211970142, into the 1stdibs search field or typing Timeless Intaglio in the search field and tapping on the drop down name to be taken to our storefront. Two or all three of these pieces would make for a striking display grouping. A discount is available for the purchase of multiple pieces. David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter who specialized in landscapes, architectural subjects, and scenes from the Middle East and Europe. Born in Edinburgh, Roberts began his career at age ten as an apprentice to a house painter and eventually became a scene painter for theater companies in Edinburgh and London. In the 1820s, J. M. W. Turner recognized his artistic talent and encouraged him to become a full-time artist. He began to focus on painting landscapes and architecture. In 1838 he traveled to Egypt and soon after to the Holy Land, concluding in Jerusalem. Roberts' travels in the Middle East had a profound impact on his art, and he produced a series of highly detailed and realistic paintings and sketches of the region's famous ruins and other landmarks, including the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, the Temple of Abu Simbel...

Balaclava - The target in sight -
Located in Berlin, DE
Heinrich Haberl (1869 Passau to 1934 Munich), Sturmhaube, c. 1900. drypoint, 14 x 10 cm (platemark), 28 x 21 cm (sheet size), 39 x 29 cm (passe-partout), titled "Sturmhaube" in lead at lower left and inscribed "Kaltnadelradierung", signed and locally inscribed "Heinrich Haberl Mchn. [Munich]" at lower right, inscribed again in lead on verso and with old collection stamp. - slightly darkened, fixed and mounted - The target in sight - About the artwork The theatrical "role-portrait" is to be seen against the background of the Rembrandt cult, which reached its climax at the end of the 19th century. The soldier seems to have stepped straight out of Rembrandt's Night Watch (1642) to fix something outside the picture with an alert and ready gaze. The steeply rising brim of the morion frames the gaze and thus perspectivises it as the actual 'pictorial action'. The gaze represents both the vigilant defence and the visionary goal of the battle. Not only the subject, but also the style of the etching needle reflect Rembrandt's understanding of the times. Strong contrasts of light and dark are created in a virtuoso free stroke, without losing the effect of the reflections on the helmet and in the eyes. This shows a kinship with the early prints of Lovis Corinth, who also saw himself as an artist in the role of the knight. Against this background, Haberl's picture can also be seen as a representation of his artistic self-image. About the artist Heinrich Haberl first attended the art school in Nuremberg and from 1892 studied at the Munich Academy. There he was a master student of Johann Leonhard von Raab, Rudolf von Seitz, Franz von Defregger...

An engraving of All Souls' chapel. All Souls College was founded in 1437 by Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury, to serve as a memorial to Henry V and the English dead in the Hundred Years War. The Front Quad appears virtually unchanged since it was first built in the years 1438-1343, thanks to a sympathetic Victorian restoration. The chapel was modelled after that of New College, where Chichele was a Member. It has a superb hammer-beam roof, excellent medieval stained glass, and a large number of original stalls. All services in the chapel are according to the Book of Common Prayer; the King James Bible...

Approach of the Simoon, Desert of Gizeh: 19th C. Hand-colored Roberts Lithograph
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored lithograph entitled "Approach of the Simoon, Desert of Gizeh" by David Roberts, from his Egypt and Nubia volumes of the large folio edition, published in London by F. G. Moon in 1849. The lithographs were prepared by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) from drawings and paintings by Roberts. The resultant large folio editions of 'The Holy Land' and 'Egypt & Nubia' are considered the greatest lithographically illustrated works issued in the 19th century. This is the most famous and collectible of David Roberts' works, entitled "Approach of the Simoon, Desert of Gizeh". The scene captures the dramatic moment when a fierce sandstorm, known as a simoon, approaches a caravan traveling through the desert of Gizeh in Egypt. The scene is filled with swirling clouds of sand, which obscure the figures of the travelers and their camels. The sky is dark and ominous, with lightning bolts striking the ground in the distance. The figures in the foreground appear to be huddling together for protection, while one man in the center struggles to keep his turban from being blown away. Roberts' lithograph is particularly striking for its attention to detail and its use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The figures and camels in the foreground are rendered with great precision, while the distant landscape and stormy sky are suggested with broad, sweeping strokes. Overall, "Approach of the Simoon, Desert of Gizeh" is a powerful and evocative image of the harsh realities of life in the desert, and a testament to David Roberts' skill as an artist. This is the most well known and sought-after of all Roberts prints, as well as the most difficult to find and hence most expensive. This hand-colored lithograph is printed on wove paper with wide margins. The print is in excellent condition. It is presented in a gold-colored wood frame with a tan mat. It is glazed with UV conservation glass. All framing materials used are archival museum quality. The frame measures 23.75" high and 29" wide. There are two additional iconic David Roberts hand-colored lithographs for sale on 1stdibs that are matted and framed in identical styles, although slightly different sizes. They are scenes of Petra and the Citadel of Cairo. They can be viewed by typing their reference #'s, LU1173211969422 and LU1173211970142, into the 1stdibs search field or typing Timeless Intaglio in the search field and tapping on the drop down name to be taken to our storefront.

Feminist Writers - I am the Author of This Remarkable Play!!
Located in Santa Monica, CA
HONORE DAUMIER (1808 – 1871) LES BAS-BLEUS - THE BLUE STOCKINGS, 1844 (Daumier Register; Delteil, 1227 ii/ii) Lithograph as published in "Le Charivari" March 17, 1844. Plate 17 from the series Les Bas Bleus on thin wove paper with text on verso. 7.36 x 8.62 inches. LES BAS-BLEUS is a series of 40 numbered lithographs, which appeared in the Charivari between January 30, 1844 and August 7, 1844. The usual centerfold from the folded publication. A sheet of acid free black paper placed behind to minimize the text from the verso Provenance: The Richard Vogler Collection. Vogler's Collection of the caricatures of George Cruikshank, now at UCLA, was the largest private collections of his work in America. From the "Daumier Register" website: TRANSLATION (The audience at the Odeon Theatre.) - Author... Author!.... Author! - Gentlemen, your impatience is about to be rewarded.... You want to know the author of this remarkable play that has just obtained such a great, and I must say, justified success.... that author... is MEEEEE....! LES BAS-BLEUS (The bluestockings) is a series of 40 numbered lithographs, which appeared in the Charivari between January 30, 1844 and August 7, 1844. ALBUM LES BAS-BLEUS. The series (“Les Bas-Bleus”) proved to be of such a success with the public, that apart from the Charivari edition a separate edition was published on single white sheets and sold at an up-market price to collectors. Apart from that, an album LES BAS-BLEUS was published in the same year (1844). ABOUT THIS PRINT. The Odéon theatre in Paris opened in 1797 and merged in 1946 with the Comédie Française. It reopened again in 1959 as an independent theatre under the name Théatre de France. This print shows an enthusiastic public applauding the author at the opening night. It seems that the female author had hidden behind a male name. The applause stops when the audience fully realizes the deception. This print can be seen in reference to George Sand's play "Cosima", which also had been rejected by the public under similar circumstances. BLUESTOCKINGS. The expression "Bluestocking” (or suffragette) dates back to 18th century England. At that time, angry young gentlemen of society met in London at the Montague House to discuss literary and political questions of their time. As a sign of protest against the establishment they wore blue wool-socks instead of black silk stockings. The expression was taken over by 19th century France to ridicule the new movement carried by Jeanne Désirée (1832), Cécile Fourmel, Suzanne Vailquin, and Claire Demar. George Sand and Flora Tristan joined the group later. Leclerc de Buffon (1707-1788), famous writer and scientist, as well as Madame de Staël...
