Abstract Prints and Multiples

ABSTRACT STYLE

Beginning in the early 20th century, abstract art became a leading style of modernism. Rather than portray the world in a way that represented reality, as had been the dominating style of Western art in the previous centuries, abstract paintings, prints and sculptures are marked by a shift to geometric forms, gestural shapes and experimentation with color to express ideas, subject matter and scenes.

Although abstract art flourished in the early 1900s, propelled by movements like Fauvism and Cubism, it was rooted in the 19th century. In the 1840s, J.M.W. Turner emphasized light and motion for atmospheric paintings in which concrete details were blurred, and Paul Cézanne challenged traditional expectations of perspective in the 1890s.

Some of the earliest abstract artists — Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint — expanded on these breakthroughs while using vivid colors and forms to channel spiritual concepts. Painter Piet Mondrian, a Dutch pioneer of the art movement, explored geometric abstraction partly owing to his belief in Theosophy, which is grounded in a search for higher spiritual truths and embraces philosophers of the Renaissance period and medieval mystics. Black Square, a daringly simple 1913 work by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich, was a watershed statement on creating art that was free “from the dead weight of the real world,” as he later wrote.

Surrealism in the 1920s, led by artists such as Salvador Dalí, Meret Oppenheim and others, saw painters creating abstract pieces in order to connect to the subconscious. When Abstract Expressionism emerged in New York during the mid-20th century, it similarly centered on the process of creation, in which Helen Frankenthaler’s expressive “soak-stain” technique, Jackson Pollock’s drips of paint, and Mark Rothko’s planes of color were a radical new type of abstraction.

Conceptual art, Pop art, Hard-Edge painting and many other movements offered fresh approaches to abstraction that continued into the 21st century, with major contemporary artists now exploring it, including Anish Kapoor, Mark Bradford, El Anatsui and Julie Mehretu.

Original signed and numbered 1970's screen print by Hundertwasser, 'Good morning
Located in Petworth, West Sussex
Friedensreich Hundertwasser was an Austrian artist and architect celebrated for his unique, colorful, and organic designs that challenged conventional architectural norms. His work, heavily influenced by artists like Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, also drew inspiration from nature, incorporating spirals and irregular forms. As an architect, Hundertwasser championed environmental sustainability, and this ethos informed his projects, such as the Hundertwasser House in Vienna. His painting style was characterised by intense colours, ornamental elements, and a rejection of straight lines. Hundertwasser’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Venice Biennale and São Paulo Biennial, and he has been recognised with awards including the Grand Decoration of Honour for Services to the Republic of Austria. The details of the work are as follows: Friedensreich Hundertwasser (Austrian, 1928 – 2000) Good morning City...

This is the third screenprint edition Frankenthaler ever made. "The Metropolitan Scene", a portfolio of prints by Richard Anuszkiewicz, Helen Frankenthaler, Adolph Gottlieb, Nicholas Krushenick, Roy Lichtenstein, and George Segal, was commissioned for a traveling exhibition organized by the Education Department of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY. The museum received ten Roman-numbered copies for this purpose. Tanglewood Press then released all but Gottlieb's print in numbered editions of fifty. (Gottlieb's contract with Marlborough Gallery, New York, NY, did not permit commercial release of his print by the publisher). "Air Frame" (cat. no. 6) was Frankenthaler's first silkscreen - a medium that Universal Limited Art Editions, West Islip, NY did not use, although it became increasingly popular for artists' prints, both in Europe and the United States, during the sixties. Biography: Frank Stella (1936-) is an American artist best known for his use of geometric patterns and shapes in creating both paintings and sculptures. Arguably one of the most influential living American artists, Stella’s works utilize the formal properties of shape, color, and composition to explore non-literary narratives, as seen in his work Harrar II (1967) from the Protractor series. “Abstraction didn't have to be limited to a kind of rectilinear geometry or even a simple curve geometry. It could have a geometry that had a narrative impact. In other words, you could tell a story with the shapes,” he explained. “It wouldn't be a literal story, but the shapes and the interaction of the shapes and colors would give you a narrative sense. You could have a sense of an abstract piece flowing along and being part of an action or activity.” Born on May 12, 1936 in Malden, MA, Stella went on to study history at Princeton University before moving to New York in 1958. Having moved to the city, Stella was immersed in the heyday Abstract Expressionism, but it was the work of Jasper Johns that inspired Stella’s Black...

Located in Richmond, GB
The twenty-two paintings known as the "Constellations" were begun by Miro in Normandy, France in 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War and completed in Barcelona two years later after Miró and his family had been forced to flee France in the wake of the German invasion. The surrealist poet Andre Breton was so moved by the "Constellations" that he composed a series of poems inspired by and named after the paintings. In 1959, Pierre Matisse published the poems in conjunction with exquisite pochoirs (stencil prints) after Miró's original compositions and a specially commissioned signed lithograph by Miró...
