"Spectral Reparations", print, shadows, bone, deer, agates, copper, blue, greens

2021

About the Item

Miller Opie’s “Spectral Reparations” is a 25.25 x 19.25 inch framed limited edition color photographic giclee print. The image is a photograph of Opie’s sculpture, “Reparations” and is part of her “Umbra Exploration” series. In this series, Opie examines the dramatic graphic shadows her sculptures create which enhance the volume of her dimensional artwork. The sculpture was photographed on a white ground in bright sunlight and appears to rise from the paper's surface. The strong shadows reflect the bright blue sky and enhance the textural detail and colors found in the deer mandible, agates, sand dollar and copper plate of the sculpture. While at first glance the piece looks monochromatic, the overall effect is rich with subtle blues, greens and golds. Signed edition of 25. The image is printed on museum quality 21mil 100% cotton rag paper. The paper is acid-free, lignin-free, and optical brightener (OBA) free. The print is available in two different professionally framed options: wood with a satin black finish OR natural wood with a white-wash finish both with plexiglass. The print is also available unframed and printed 19 x 13 inches upon request. All prints come with a signed letter of authenticity calling out the number of the print in the series. Miller Opie’s work explores and exorcises her life-altering experience that began in 2009 when she learned that she had several benign tumors that were destroying her jawbone. Over three years of surgeries and procedures inspire her to intimately explore beauty, decay and fragility. Opie has had a lifelong passion and obsession for collecting bones, shells and other natural objects. Working with found organic materials allows her the thrill of the search, the experience of discovery and the joy of combining and manipulating shapes. Opie’s desire is to create something better, something more compelling, by repairing a broken cow femur, reimagining deer vertebrae or combining moose ribs with feathers. Inspired by the new metal plate in her jaw, Opie adds brass screws, metal chain or silk thread to these discarded, decaying animal parts to give them a new life. Opie is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, a member of the Sculptors Guild of New York City and is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
