About

This etching and aquatint by John Taylor Arms was created in 1920. It was printed in an edition of 100. This impression is inscribed "Artist Proof" - meaning it is outside of the edition. It is signed in pencil and inscribed "printed by Frederick Reynolds." The paper size is 12 1/2 x 9 1/2" and Image size 6 3/4 x 5" (17.1 x 12.7 cm). John Taylor Arms (1887-1953) was born in Washington, D.C., on April 19, 1887. In 1905 he began his higher education as a law student at Princeton University. Within two years he transferred to Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study architecture. Arms apprenticed as an architectural draftsman before opening an architectural firm with Cameron Clark as a partner in 1914. In 1913 he married Dorothy Noyes. As a Christmas present that year she gave him an etching kit. At first, he took up etching as a hobby, mastering the technique by copying European masters. He published his first print "Sunlight and Shadow" in 1915. During WWI he served in the Navy and in 1919 decided to give up his career as an architect and dedicated himself to art, primarily etching, for the remainder of his life. In total, Arms produced almost 450 prints. The official count of published prints is 429. He produced a small group of lithographs, but the majority of the prints are etchings. During his art career, he was very successful both as an artist and author. He and his wife wrote numerous books including "Churches of France," "Handbook of Print Making" and "Print Makers," "Hill Towns and Cities of Northern Italy," and "Design in Flower Arrangement." It is important to point out that aside from being one of the great printmakers of the early twentieth century, he was also highly regarded by fellow artists. He served as president of the Society of American Etchers, now known as the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA). John Taylor Arms is also noted to have been very supportive to fellow artists.
