About the Item

Hand-Colored engraving by G.P. Trautner from Les Delices Des Yeux et de L'esprit, or Collection Generales des Differentes Especes de Coquillages Que La Mer Renferme (Delights for the Eyes and the Spirit, or a General Collection of the Different Species of Shells that the Sea Contains); edited by Georg Wolfgang Knorr (1705-1761). First published Nuremberg, Germany 1760-1773. Engraved by Val Bischoff, C. Dietsch, Johann Conrad Kleemann, J.C. Keller, G.P. Trautner et al. As a young man Knorr was a copperplate engraver for Johann Leonhard Blanc. He became interested in natural history through his work on illustrations for Johannes Jacob Scheuchzer's "Physica sacra" (1731), resulting in the pursuit of his own studies and subsequent broad base of knowledge gained in art history and the natural sciences. In the second half of the 18th century his native Nuremberg became the center of production for fine natural history books in Germany, largely due to the patronage of C.J. Trew. A wealthy physician and natural history collector, Trew assembled a group of artist and scientists including Knorr to contribute drawings, engravings, and hand-coloring of the plates for several natural history publications. Having started his own publishing firm in 1730, Knorr published numerous engravings and scientific works distinguished by their beautiful hand-colored plates. Knorr’s classic work Les Delices Des Yeux et de l’Esprit is one of the most renowned publication on shells.
