About the Item

Hand-colored mezzotint engraving printed in color and finished by hand on laid paper from "Phytanthoza Iconographia." Edited by Johann Wihelm Weinmann (1683-1741) with drawings by Georg Dionysus Ehret (1708-1770) et al (unknown). All designs engraved and hand-colored by Bartholomaus Seuter (1678-1754), Johann Ridinger (1698-1767) and Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767). Published by H. Lentz and H.G. Neubauer, et al., Regensburg: 1737-1745. J. Weinmann was an influential apothecary and botanist, director of the longest established pharmacy in Regensburg, Germany. He is best known for his monumental "Phytanthoza Iconographia," one of the most comprehensive sets of botanicals ever produced. This ambitious work covered over 4,000 plants and flowers depicted on 1,025 plates, and is recognised as the first important botanical work to use color engraved prints. Many of the prints were engraved using a newly developed process combining etching and mezzotint to capture subtle tonal variations, which were enhanced by hand-coloring. George Ehret is considered the finest and most influential botanical artist of the 18th century. Weinmann commissioned the then young Georg Ehret to create the drawings for "Phytanthoza iconograph" but due to unhappiness over his meager payment, he left Weinmann's employ after completing about five hundred of the over one thousand drawings for "Phytanthoza". He later came under the patronage of Dr. Jacob Trew of Nuremberg, and his career flourished as he traveled throughout Europe - befriending and collaborating with the esteemed naturalist Carl Linnaeus along the way - before finally settling in London where he lived out his life successfully as a painter and instructor. Many of his works are now in the collections of museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Natural History Museum.
