About the Item

Raymond Pettibon Black Flag poster circa 1983: Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist once said of Pettibon's Black Flag illustrations and iconic logo: "Before I knew what Black Flag was I remember walking around Hollywood and seeing Raymond's flyers and being like, 'What the fuck is that?'… Those flyers made me feel like something is going on and it's romantic and it's mysterious and it's heavy and I don't know what it is but I wanna know." Offset-print on smooth wove paper. Circa 1983. 11 x 13.75 inches. Fair overall condition - true punk character & feel; center fold-line; loss to left upper edge; scattered pin-holes and signs of handling. Printed signature lower right. Rare; from an edition of unknown. Raymond Pettibon Black Flag: Further History: Between the years 1978 and 1986 Raymond Pettibon (aka, Raymond Pettibone; St. Pettibone) produced a now historic amassment of graphic works for the seminal Southern California punk band Black Flag. Published mostly by SST Records - founded by Pettibon's brother and Black Flag guitarist, Greg Ginn, these works shed valuable light on the origin and development of Pettibon’s thematic interests & style; not to mention his evolution into one of the most important artist’s of his generation. More On Raymond Pettibon Raymond Pettibon’s work embraces a wide spectrum of American “high” and “low” culture, from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality. Taking their points of departure in the Southern California punk-rock culture of the late 1970's and 80's and the “do-it-yourself” aesthetic of album covers, concert flyers, comics and fanzines that characterized the movement, his drawings have come to occupy their own genre of powerful and dynamic American commentary.
