The poster features David Hockney's 1972 drawing Celia in a Black Dress. Viewed through elegantly drooping tulip stems, Celia Birtwell stares dreamily ahead. With one hand paused in a gesture, she seems frozen in a moment in time. Shaded in lavender and pink, Hockney's subject achieves a pastel luminescence. Delicate doodles and lines in a rainbow of colors adorn the borders and text, which reads: 'David Hockney: Travels with Pen, Pencil and Ink / Drawings and Prints 1961-1979.' This vintage poster was designed by the artist in our studio and comes directly from our Petersburg Press archive. It is not pre-owned.
Hockney has been an avid portraitist throughout his career, drawing and painting subjects ranging from his mother and Celia Birtwell, his muse over many decades, to art dealer Larry Gagosian and artist John Baldessari. He often depicted his models seated relaxed in an armchair, as is seen here.
