This is a colored woodcut artist proof by British born artist Penelope Bennett. Signed lower bottom and also verso. Done circa 1960. Round gilt frame. 17 x 17 inches.
The following is the biography of Penelope Bennett:
I was born in London, England, where I received my early education. Later my family emigrated to the United States, and in New York I attended Hunter College (where I majored in art) as well as Cooper Union.
After working in design for five years, I returned to Europe, setting up my studio in Catalonia, where I was able to devote myself to art for thirteen years. During that sojourn in Spain, inspired by the harsh contrast between sunshine and shade, I found myself drawn to making woodcuts and linocuts. Later, returning to the United States, I came to live in Vermont, and bought a sizeable printing press, realizing that the print medium of today is one of the most thriving , inventive and rich art forms. I was able to increase my printmaking skills at Two Rivers Printmaking Workshop, where I learned to make etchings, drypoint, monoprint and wood engraving.
Over the years I have shown my works in Spain, England( the Royal Academy) , and the US, I have been commissioned to make print editions, and have received commissions from the City University of New York for graphic murals. My prints are in the collections of the University of Vermont, the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College's Hood Museum, St. Joseph College, Minnesota, Museo de Bellas Artes, Mexico City, as well as in private collections.
