Paul Suttman
Expressionist Offset Lithograph

About the Item

Paul Suttman, a sculptor best known for Impressionistic figurative works in bronze, died Wednesday at his home in South Kent, Conn. He was 59. The cause was heart failure, said Jacques Kaplan, an art dealer in Kent who represented him. Mr. Suttman, who was born July 16, 1933, in Enid, Okla., earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1956 and his master's degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1958. He also studied with the Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzu. As a young man, Mr. Suttman designed and built racing cars, worked as a draftsman for the Atomic Energy Commission (predecessor to the Department of Engery) and was an assistant of the architect Eero Saarinen. He had his first exhibition with the Donald Morris Gallery in Detroit in 1959 and from 1962 to 1973 exhibited regularly at the Terry Dintenfass Gallery in New York. Mr. Suttman, who was awarded a Prix de Rome three times in the mid-1960s, lived in Italy from 1962 to 1975. His early work was sometimes compared with Rodin's and Renoir's because of its loose, Impressionistic surface. In the 1970s, his work became more precisely realistic and focused on life-size still lifes, often involving tables or tabletops, whose objects sometimes seem precariously balanced and about to fall. Mr. Suttman's work is represented in several public collections, including those of the Museum of Modern Art, the Morgan Library and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington.

  • Screenprint Serigraph Art Print WPA Artist NYC Frank Kleinholz Children Playing
    By Frank Kleinholz

Frank Kleinholz (Brooklyn, 1901 - 1987) 1963 Children playing in park Screenprint, serigraph Born in Brooklyn, New York, Frank Kleinholz was a painter based in New York City whose work spanned several art movements including Expressionism and Social Realism. His work was strongly influenced by Max Beckmann, is a late survival of the social commentary expressionism of the WPA era; His early lithograph works were intensely personal and reflected the influence of the Depression and the World Wars, but his palette lightened as he increasingly focused on families and the bonds between adults and children. He was contemporary of William Gropper and Ben Shahn. As the son of a blind father and hard-working mother who supported the family with a delicatessen. From early childhood, he had to earn a living and sold newspapers and ran errands for local businesses. He graduated from Fordham Law School, and at age 23 was admitted to the bar. In the mid-1930s, while practicing insurance as well as law, he began oil painting and printmaking with teachers including Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He gained quick recognition and between 1941 and 1980 participated in numerous exhibitions including the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Museum and the Worcester Art Institute. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Kleinholz graduated Fordham Law School in 1923. In the 1930s, he began studying painting under Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Sol Wilson. He quickly rose to prominence with the inclusion of Abstract art in the Carnegie Institute exhibition of 1941. His painting Backstreet won a purchase prize by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Chronology His strongest influences were American Social Realists Reginald Marsh and Philip Evergood, the German Expressionists George Grosz and Kathe Kollwitz, the Mexican muralists Diego Rivera, Jorge Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, and the early 20th century Paris Modernists. Described by Newsweek as a "Brooklyn-born Gauguin," Kleinholz focused on urban life in New York, Brooklyn and Coney Island, as well as intimate, social realist scenes of parents and children, watercolor paintings of flowers and birds, and sunbathers. His political works include anti war paintings...

  • Polish Israeli Artist Expressionist Hand Signed Lithograph
    By Moshe Bernstein
    Located in Surfside, FL
Born in Poland in 1920, Bernstein completed his art studies in the Academy of Vilna in 1939. His family was wiped out in the Holocaust, but he survived the war and lived in Russia until 1947, when he immigrated to Palestine as part of the "illegal immigration" (aliyah bet). He was caught and spent time in a detention camp in Cyprus. Bernstein's artistic path in Israel recalls that of other painters who reflected their memories of small Jewish Diaspora towns, or shtetls. At a certain stage, these artists were rejected by the local art scene. In the 1950s, '60s and '70s, the subject aroused public interest and recognition. In 1948, Bernstein participated in a group exhibit in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and in 1949 in a group exhibit at Artists' House (then known as the Artists' Pavilion). In 1954, he participated in another exhibition - of young artists - in the Tel Aviv Museum. In 1962, he had a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum, another in 1967 at the Haifa Museum, and a retrospective in 1973 in the Ein Harod Museum of Art. Interspersed among these events were shows at the Katz and Chemerinsky Galleries in Tel Aviv. A Bernstein exhibit, which included paintings of the shtetl, was shown in 1998 at the international theater festival in Parma, Italy. In 1999, he was awarded a prize by the Massuah Institute for the Study of the Holocaust, for his "documentation of the world that vanished at the beginning of his career." His paintings appeared on the walls of the defunct Kassit cafe in Tel Aviv, and in the Kiton restaurant - "places in which he ate...
