Original vintage railway travel poster - The Booklovers' Britain Edinburgh - issued by LNER / London & North Eastern Railway of England and Scotland featuring a colourful design by one of England's leading poster artists Austin Cooper (1890-1964) depicting smartly dressed people standing next to a cannon chatting and enjoying the views from the historic Edinburgh Castle with the city, green fields and hills below the castle walls and the colourful stylised lettering against the black border reading: Planning his escape from the castle St Ives asked Flora to indicate the direction of her home "St Ives" by R.L.S. next to the text It's Quicker By Rail inside a yellow and orange circle and the railway text along the bottom. St Ives was written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) in 1897; set during the Napoleonic Wars, the book is an adventure love story about a French prisoner of war (Champdivers / St Ives) held in Edinburgh Castle and Flora Gilchrist who visits the French prisoners. Printed in Great Britain by Mccorquodale and Co Ltd. Good condition, restored folds, restored paper losses, light staining, backed on linen.
