About the Item

This work was created for the artist’s 2018 solo exhibition "Field Walk Works". New works created for "Field Walk Works" evoke events of biology and science within the theatre of nature. Armata reveals brief instances of phenomena that she encounters while walking through fields in all seasons. These fragments are transferred directly onto the flat, yet texturally exciting plane of etched plates. There, shadows, shapes, textures, and details emerge and disappear, as often occurs unwitnessed in nature. From here, the images go on to become etchings and aquatints, expanding upon a body of work that underscores Armata’s lifetime mastery of printmaking. "Field Walk Works" witnesses a silent, eternal world within a world, universal in microcosm as in cosmic scale. Brief, visual, and even minimal, the gestures and textures that Armata brings to light (and dark) always surprise. Biography: Internationally recognized master engraver Ludmila Armata lives and works in Quebec. Born in Zabrze, Poland in 1954, Armata holds an MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and a PhD in Printmaking from the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. The artist is the recipient of multiple awards and grants throughout her career, including the 2002 Prix de la Fondation Monique et Robert Parizeau and grants from Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec. In the past twenty years, Armata has participated in numerous biennales, residencies, solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally. Her work can be found in more than fifteen museum collections around the world as well as numerous private and corporate collections such as National Bank and Desjardins. Armata notably often works with steel engraving, a rarely used printmaking technique that allows for finer detail with sharper and more distinct lines. and longer-wearing, more durable plates.
