About the Item

Enoshima in Sagami Province is an original modern artwork realized by Utagawa Hiroshige between the 1834 and the 1835 and printed for the first time by Sakai Editions in 1919. Original woodcut on paper. The work includes the frame (cm 43.5 x 53.8). Good condition, fresh colors, and very good impression. Minor browning, creasing, and minimal small tears around the edges. Enoshima in Sagami Province is a work from the no. 10 from the series Intermediate Tokaido Stations and Views on the Narita Highway. Hiroshige created the designs for this series between 1834 and 1835, but it was never printed during his lifetime. In 1919, the S. Sakai publishing firm learned of the existence of the original drawings intended for Edo era release, which belonged to Mr. Takahata Kazuwo, a collector in Yokohama. Sakai used the original drawings, which had already been prepared for block cutting, to expertly produce the first and only edition of the series ever released. The work is a beautiful and wonderful work that depicts a typical Japanease seaside landscape, a seascape with a cliff. The work has fresh and lively colors. The sea cliff is realized with lively and very fresh colors. The work has been realized by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797, Edo — 1858, Edo). He was a Japanese artist, one of the last great ukiyo-e (“pictures of the floating world”) masters of the colour woodblock print. His genius for landscape compositions was first recognized in the West by the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. His print series Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (1833–34) is perhaps his finest achievement.
