About

Intaglio restrike engraving (c. 1960) after the original engraving by Samuel William Reynolds of the 1844 oil painting by Richard Ansdell, The Caledonian Coursing Meeting near Castle Androssan with the Isle of Arran in the Distance. Richard Ansdell was born to Thomas Griffiths Ansdell, a ship’s pulley block maker at Liverpool docks, and Anne (nee Jackson), a seamstress. His father died when he was young and he was educated at the Bluecoat School (for orphans). When he left school he trained in art under W. C. Smith, profile and portrait painter of Chatham, Kent. . In 1836 he became a student at the Liverpool Academy and eventually became President in 1845. Prior to this he had married Maria Romer (a Liverpool girl) and they went on to have eleven children. By 1840 he had already exhibited two pictures (“Grouse Shooting: Lunch on the Moors” and “A Galloway Farm”) at the Royal Academy in London. – his largest commission at this time being “The Country Meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society at Bristol” – 16 feet long including 125 separate portraits. Between 1840 and 1885 he exhibited pictures at the Royal Academy every year (149 in all) and also at the British Institution. His popularity was established by two paintings in particular: “The Combat” – two red stags locked in battle; and “The Fight for the Standard at the Battle of Waterloo” being a lifesized depiction of Sargentt. Ewart of the Scots Greys grappling for the French Standard at the battle. This huge picture (13 x 11 feet) now hangs in the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle. In 1847 he left his native Liverpool and moved to Kensington. Ansdell was elected Associate of the Royal Academy in 1861 and Royal Academician in 1870. He became one of the most successful Victorian sporting artists, collaborating on huge canvases with artists such as Thomas Creswick (1811 – 1869) and William Powell Frith (1819 – 1909). Samuel William Reynolds was a mezzotint engraver, landscape painter and landscape gardener. Reynolds was a popular engraver in both Britain and France and there are over 400 examples of his work in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Reynolds was born July 4, 1773. His father was born in the West Indies, the son of a planter, but, being sent in his youth to England for education, settled there permanently, and married Reynolds' mother, Sarah Hunt. Reynolds studied in the schools of the Royal Academy, and under the mezzotint engravers Charles Howard Hodges and John Raphael Smith. In 1797 he engraved a plate of The Relief of Prince Adolphus and Marshal Freytag after Mather Brown. During the next twenty years Reynolds produced many fine works, including The Vulture and Lamb, The Falconer, Leopards, Vulture and Snake, all after James Northcote; A Land Storm, after George Morland; portraits of Sir Joshua Reynolds, Sir J. F. Leicester, and Lady Harcourt, after Joshua Reynolds; portraits of Lady Elizabeth Whitbread and the Duchess of Bedford, after John Hoppner; The Jewish Merchant, after Rembrandt; and The Rainbow, after Rubens. Reynolds worked with great rapidity,[ often combining etching, aquatint and stipple engraving techniques with the mezzotint. In 1809, Reynolds paid his first visit to Paris, and in 1810 and 1812 exhibited engravings at the Salon. Between 1820 and 1826 he issued, a series of 357 small plates in four volumes, reproducing all the then accessible works of Sir Joshua Reynolds. Image size: 21 x 42 inches Sheet size 29 x 49 inches (on heavy art paper)
