Michael Dal Cerro
Michael Dal Cerro, Triumph of the Grid, 2019, Linocut, Urban Landscape, Modern

About the Item

Michael Dal Cerro's prints could be seen as imaginary architectural proposals. He takes satisfaction in taking something that is supposed to be exact, architecture, and transforming it into something that is improbable. Cities are evolutionary creations that are the result of both chance and careful planning. Dal Cerro's tries to embrace the same kinds of creative contradictions in his work. He is interested in representations of the city as a symbol of ‘Progress’ and ‘Modernity’. But he also wants to explore the sense of anxiety and uncertainty that often accompanies change. The imagery and vocabulary of forms employed in Dal Cerro's work are the result of working from observation, imagination, preparatory drawings and the printmaking process. An important aspect of this work is the exploration of different systems of representing pictoral space. One point perspective, for example, or two point perspective, are systems for representing space. In recent works he is using isometric projection, a system that architects, engineers and video game designers use to depict objects in space. Dal Cerro's approach to printmaking has a wide range of sources and influences, from early 20th century German Expressionist architects, painters and printmakers, to Japanese color woodblock prints. Popular culture, such as movies and comic books also inform his work. The artist admires the look and feel of mass produced, four color printing processes on newsprint used in old comic books. HIs imagery also owes something to the kind of sham architecture and fantastic alternate worlds found in comic books and movies with their renderings of ill-conceived futuristic cities.
