About

JOHN BAPTISTE HOMANN (1663 – 1724) (J. G. Doppelmayr 1671 - 1750) THE MOON c. 1704 TABULA SELENOGRAPHICA IN QUA LUNARIUM MACULARUM EXACTA DESCRIPTO ..….. Nurnberg 1704-42. Engraving, 19 ½’ x 22 ½”. Sheet 21 ¾” x 24 3/8. Hand coloring possibly later. Likely the 1742 edition. Beautiful and historically important double hemisphere image of the moon. It is based on the models of Johanus Hevelius and Giovnni Riccioli. It is the first comparative set of charts of the earlier Hevelius (c.1647) and the later Riccioli /Grimaldi (c.1651) version. Hevelius map is considered to be the foundation lunar map. However over time Riccioli’s nomenclature came to be the excepted one. For example the Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility). Very good condition with ample margins $1,650 Note: The right side is a straight line. Map not flat when photographed
