Ross Racine
"Precept", Limited Edition Print, Abstract Landscape

2018

About the Item

signed and editioned on reverse. (edition of 5) 23 1/2"x31 1/2" This limited edition print by Ross Racine has an abstract quality in the composition. The parallel diagonal lines appear as obscured roadways and buildings. The rose pink ground has a visual texture of digital grain with yellow hues. The static pattern of color contrasts with the highly rendered clarity of the visible aerial view of buildings in the periphery. Drawn freehand directly on a computer and printed on a high-end inkjet printer, Racine’s drawings do not contain photographs or scanned material. The subjects of his work may be interpreted as models for planned communities or as aerial views of fictional suburbs, referencing the computer as a tool for urban planning as well as image capture. Raising questions about the relation between design and actual lived experience, the works subvert the apparent rationality of urban design, exposing conflicts that lie beneath the surface. These digital drawings are a comment on the fears as well as the dreams expressed in suburban culture. Signed and numbered. His prints have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the United States, Canada, and Europe, in venues such as the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège (Liège, Belgium), the International Print Biennale (Newcastle, UK), Splitgraphic (Split, Croatia), Shengzhi Culture Space (Beijing), the International Print Triennial (Vienna, Austria and Katowice, Poland), the Des Moines Art Center (Des Moines, Iowa), Drexel University (Philadelphia), the Koffler Centre Gallery (Toronto), the Cain Schulte Gallery (San Francisco), the Front Room Gallery (New York), the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, the International Print Center (New York), and the Manifest Creative Research and Drawing Center (Cincinnati). Racine's work is in numerous public and private collections, including the New York Public Library Print Collection, the Des Moines Art Center (Iowa), the Johnson & Johnson collection (New Brunswick, New Jersey), the Hallmark collection (Kansas City, Missouri), the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art (Iowa), the Hunterdon Museum of Art (Clinton, New Jersey), Arkansas State University (State University, Arkansas) and Purdue University (West Lafayette, Indiana). His prints have been presented and reviewed in several publications, such as Art In Print (Chicago), Artforum (New York), BOMBlog (New York), BAUWELT (Berlin), STUDIO (Milan), and L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui (Paris), among others. Racine's art has been rewarded by grants and awards, notably the Johnson & Johnson purchase prize (Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, New Jersey), the Legion Paper Award (North American Print Biennial, Boston) and several grants from the Canada Council. A selection of Racine's prints has won the biennial prize at the Biennale internationale de Gravure contemporaine in Liège, Belgium.

  • Abstract India Edition 3/5 Linocut Print Green Blue Turquoise Architectural
    By Mukesh Sharma
    Located in Norfolk, GB
There is a natural and raw understanding in Mukesh Sharma’s prints that both depict, and are influenced by, the Rajastani communities of his home town in rural India. In these Limited Edition fine-art prints, made over a period of twenty years, we are offered the colours of India’s ancient land, the textures, light and the patterns that are everywhere. In the patterns of the arable fields to the jali's (carved screens) in the architecture. This work is however not romantic nor nostalgic but shows a deeper rooted need to offer a visual heritage of place, of where the artist is from and the journey that he is taking. The results are both compelling and honest. Mukesh Sharma, Celebration B, Lino-cut on Drawing paper Edition: 3 of 5, 2005 Image size: 47 x 39 cm / Sheet size: 79 x 55 cm Unframed Mukesh Sharma's work: It is often in childhood that paths are set for what we will become. Mukesh Sharma hails from a rural, agricultural village in Rajasthan, India. His Father is a craftsman who fixed and mended farm machinery and understood the working parts in the processes. Sharma followed in his Father’s footsteps, as is often the case in Indian families, but his was not the machines of the fields but the presses of the printing studio. Like his Father, Mukesh Sharma is fascinated with understanding how things work and how he can manipulate the metal in his hands. It is not surprising then that his medium of choice is printing. One of the most physically challenging of all the practices, it can often be physically challenging as well as technical and detailed. In his youth, Sharma would draw with stones on walls and floors. He was lucky his family encouraged this and he is grateful for his early art-training at the Jaipur School of Art but it was at the Baroda Art Department that he was introduced to the great printing traditions of Jyoti Bhatt...
