Moonlight, Rye. c. 1921. Mezzotint. 7 x 10 (sheet 8 3/4 x 11 3.4). A rich impression printed on cream wove paper. Monogrammed and dated lower left in the plate. Annotated in pencil, lower left '2nd plate not completed'. Provenance: a collection of the artist's fine art. Housed in a 20 x 16 inch archival mat suitable for framng.
A leading English etcher, engraver and watercolourist, of the 1920s and 1930s, Douglas Ian Smart studied printmaking techniques in London, under Sir Frank Short. Smart was a member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy. He etched and painted in England, France, Spain and Italy. He exhibited at Colnaghi, Chenil Gallery, Connell and Son Gallery, The Fine Art Society, the Glasgow Institute, The International Society, The Walker Gallery, the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He specialized in architectural and landscape subjects.
