About
The city of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin has a long history in the state. Before 1700, the region was inhabited by Potawatomi peoples and the first white person recorded in the area was Amable Vicau, brother-in-law of Solomon Juneau, one of the founders of Milwaukee, who established a trading post in 1827. In the following years, more white settlers began to move into the region. Oconomowoc was incorporated as a town in 1844, and the emerging infrastructure of the city quickly drew in more inhabitants: by 1853 the town grew to a population of 250, with ten stores, three hotels, one gristmill, one sawmill, and a schoolhouse.
This print reflects especially the growth the city saw in the 1870s and 1880s, when Oconomowoc started to become a summer resort town for wealthy families from the Midwest. As we can see in this print, Large houses were established around the town's lakes, particularly Oconomowoc Lake and Lac La Belle. The population grew so much that Oconomowoc incorporated as a city in 1865, and by 1880 it had a population of 3,000. Along the bottom of this bird's-eye view, a key helps the viewer identify the various houses and landmarks of the city.

The Milwaukee-based lithographic firm of Beck & Pauli (Adam Beck and Clemens J. Pauli) were publishers of panoramic maps. During the 1860s and 1870s, the major publishers and lithographers of panoramic maps were concentrated in the Chicago-Milwaukee area because of the proximity to the artists' center of Madison. Beck & Pauli Lithographers (Milwaukee), Joseph J. Stoner (Madison), and Merchants Lithographers and Chicago Lithographers (Chicago) were responsible for a large percentage of the panoramas. Adam Beck and Clemens J. Pauli operated one of the most active lithographic firms in this area, producing views drawn in thirty states and Canada. Beck and Pauli printed views from 1878 to 1889, being most active during the mid-1880s.
