PITCHING HAY no 2, c. 1940
Etching and Carborundum. Signed and numbered 10/25 in pencil. 8 1/2 x 12 inches. Sheet 10 x 13 1/2. Annotated at lower sheet edge "Carbograph and etching".
This print was done for the WPA / Federal Art Project. The editions for the WPA/FAP prints were generally 25 as in this example. It is illustrated in the Newark Museum WPA collection. Their copy has the Pennsylvania WPA label and with a stamped date of March 11. 1940. Also listed in the General Services Administration catalog of WPA prints in Museum holdings. Along with the the Newark Museum, Pitching Hay is in the Philadelphia Museum WPA collection. The Franklin Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum contains 3 Turner WPA prints but not Pitching Hay.
The Print Quarterly of March 16. 1999, Vol. 16 notes that the process of Carborundum was developed during the WPA/FAP print publication. between 1937 and 1939. As noted above this print s annotated "Carbograph and etching".
In fair condition Some foxing on the verso. Some stains in the lower margin and a repaired tear in the lower sheet edge to the plate mark and overall toning.
