Grant Wood
Sultry Night - Banned by the Post Office in 1939 - Provenance: Nan Wood

1939

About

GRANT WOOD ( 1891 - 1942) SULTRY NIGHT, 1939 (Cole 6) Lithograph, signed in pencil. Edition 100. In very good condition, Image 9 x 11 3/4 inches, sheet slightly trimmed being 11 1/2 x 14 inches. Deckle lower sheet edge. Dedicated by Nan Wood, the artist's sister. who was the subject in Woods iconic painting, American Gothic. Wood died early at the age of 51, therefore he created only 20 or fewer prints. This is Wood's rarest print published by Associated American Artists. Because of the frontal nudity it was deemed obscene and banned by the post office for distribution through the mail. The edition was curtailed and it was only available at the gallery. Many of the impressions were never signed by Wood. This is one of Wood's most sought after prints. This impression is signed and at one point was in the collection of his sister Nan and dedicated to Avis and Carl by Nan and Ed in 1959. Ed was Nan's husband. There is a full provenance that accompanies the print that is dated by its owner in 1974 Little is written about Wood's incredible lithographic technique. The subtlety of his rendering is created by a series of very fine small lines that create full round forms and are then printed in a beautiful gray ink. A very unique handling of lithography Aside from the controversy surrounding this print it is also one of his finest compositions. There is a painting of the same subject but Wood altered the completed painting by cutting off the left portion that contained the male nude. WPA, Americana, Folk Art, Impressionism, Realism, Farms, Regionalism
