Zhang Biao
Fang Fang -- The Artist's Daughter Portrait

2005

About the Item

Exceptional aquatint etching on paper by master print maker Zhang Biao. His daughter Fang Fang was published on a full page in the official catalog of the exhibition. This print received the outstanding prize of the 17th National Printmaking Exhibition - definitely one of the highest awards a printmaker can achieve in China. Signed Zhang Biao 2005 lower right with Chinese characters, title and name. Image, 32" x 20", sheet 47.5 x 37.75. (Overseas shipping, item will be rolled and shipped in a tube.) The artist no longer creates etchings and has moved to oils. A rare and exceptional Master print by a master. In terms of composition, the picture passes Chinese tradition by with its concept of space. The sitting girl is realistically captured and skillfully placed in the space with attention to perspective. The spatial details are simply restricted to floor space, a nearly immaterial black wall behind the scene and a perspective chair construction. Nevertheless the artists succeeded in suggesting an accessible room in the picture. The light - coming from multiple sources - is not as natural, but rather a stylistic means to vividly and realistically model the girl. The Aquatint Etching appeared in the official catalog of the 17th National Chinese Printmaking Exhibition in Guiyang. It is the most important exhibition of art prints in China. Only the very best artists and print works are selected out of thousands of prints submitted by hundreds of artists. The exhibition takes place about every two years, each time in a different city. His daughter was the subject of many examples of the fine print making he produced. Zhang moved into painting in oils after a number of years making the existing examples of his printing skills rare. Without a doubt, printmaker Zhang Biao is one of the most successful artists in China. He has been recognized as the most important artist at national exhibitions and his work mirrors the latest development of the country. After leaving the traditional Chinese schools, he sought a new approach to Western, especially international art, without entirely giving up traditional values. This development can be seen in the two portraits of the artist's daughter, Fang Fang. Zhang Biao is booked out with many major national exhibitions. Fang Fang stands for a whole new generation of Chinese youths that was born during the period of the economic boom and whose education and life-style will be a mixture of Western culture and old Chinese traditions - comparable to the cultural mix in post-war Japan of the 1960s. One can see in Zhang Biao's first aquatint-etching portrait of his daughter that he was still much more closely connected with the Chinese tradition and style of portraits than his later works. Even though the daughter is presented in a natural and realistic picture, there are still strong ties to traditional Chinese notions of art. The granularity of the surface is clearly recognizable and its form is reminiscent of a painting. But the portrait is close to the traditional Chinese portrait. The child sits in a stern posture with a serious expression, all of which is also felt in the picture's overall heavy note. There are also Western qualities to be found in the pictures: most apparent is the expressive light-shadow model and the accurate depiction of crinkles in the clothing. For comparison, think about the stereotypical pictures from the Cultural Revolution. Then one will see and appreciate the distinct individualism that can be found in this pictures. It does not show some standard girl in a school uniform, indistinct from all other girls. Rather Fang Fang is an individual with her own personal traits, including the large loving eyes. She is not staring. She is beholding her observer with curiosity. This different, although small, has a large effect on the overall tone of the picture.

    By Johnny Friedlaender
    Located in Soquel, CA
Bold abstract aquatint by Johnny Friedlaender (Polish-French, 1912-1992). Comprised of two main sections, this piece is full of detail and texture. The upper layer is a reddish tan, whereas the bottom layer is a rich brown. Geometrical shapes are arranged such that they almost form mirror images of each other, but vary enough to create interest and a sense of movement. Signed in the lower right corner. Numbered 56/350 in the lower left corner. Includes original certificate of authenticity. Presented in a new cream mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 42"H x 32"W Paper size: 33.75"H x 24.5"W Johnny Friedlaender was a leading 20th century artist, whose works have been exhibited in Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Japan and the United States. He has been influential upon other notable artists, who were students in his Paris gallery. His preferred medium of aquatint etching is a technically difficult artistic process, of which Friedlaender has been a pioneer. Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender was born in Pless (Silesia) and his early studies were in Breslau under Otto Mueller. In 1936 Friedlaender journeyed to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France and Belgium. At the Hague he held a successful exhibition of etchings and watercolours. He fled to Paris in 1937 as a political refugee of the Nazi regime with his young wife, who was an actress. In that year he held an exhibition of his etchings which included the works: L 'Equipe and Matieres et Formes. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps, but survived against poor odds. After freedom in 1944 Friedlaender began a series of twelve etchings entitled Images du Malheur with Sagile as his publisher. In the same year he received a commission to illustrate four books by Freres Tharaud of the French Academy. In 1945 he performed work for several newspapers including Cavalcade and Carrefour. In the year 1947, he produced the work Reves Cosmiques, and in that same year he became a member of the Salon de Mai, which position he held until 1969. In the year 1948 he began a friendship with the painter Nicolas de Stael and held his first exhibition in Copenhagen at Galerie Birch. The following year he showed for the first time in Galerie La Hune in Paris. After living in Paris for 13 years, Friedlaender became a French citizen in 1950. Friedlaender expanded his geographic scope in 1951, and exhibited in Tokyo in a modern art show. In the same year he was a participant in the XI Trienale in Milan, Italy. By 1953 he had produced works for a one-man show at the Museum of Neuchâtel and exhibited at the Galerie Moers in Amsterdam, the II Camino Gallery in Rome, in São Paulo, Brazil and in Paris. He was a participant of the French Italian Art Conference in Turin, Italy that same year. Friedlaender accepted an international art award in 1957, becoming the recipient of the Biennial Kakamura Prize in Tokyo. In 1959 he received a teaching post awarded by UNESCO at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. By 1968, Friedlaender was travelling to Puerto Rico, New York and Washington, D.C. to hold exhibitions. That year he also purchased a home in the Burgundy region of France. 1971 was another year of diverse international travel including shows in Bern, Milan, Paris, Krefeld and again New York. In the latter city he exhibited paintings at the Far Gallery, a venue becoming well known for its patronage of important twentieth century artists. From his atelier in Paris Friedlaender instructed younger artists who themselves went on to become noteworthy, among them Arthur Luiz Piza, Brigitte Coudrain, Rene Carcan...

  • Old Violinist - Late 19th Century Figurative Lithograph
    By John George Brown
    Located in Soquel, CA
Finely detailed late 19th century chromo-lithograph portrait of a violinist street musician by John George Brown (British, 1831-1913). Many of Brown’s paintings were reproduced in lithography (Chromo-lithograpy), as is the case with the one offered here. Presented in a rustic antique Oak wood frame with giltwood fillet. Image, 15.63"H x 10.63"W. John George Brown was a British citizen and an American painter born in Durham, England. His parents apprenticed him to the career of glass worker at the age of fourteen, in an attempt to dissuade him from pursuing painting. He studied nights at the School of Design in Newcastle-on-Tyne while working as a glass cutter there between 1849 and 1852, and evenings at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh while working at the Holyrood Glass Works between 1852 ad 1853. After moving to New York City in 1853, he studied with Thomas Seir Cummings at the National Academy of Design where he was elected a National Academician in 1861. Brown was the Academy’s vice-president from 1899 to 1904. Around 1855, he worked for the owner of the Brooklyn Glass Company, and later he married the daughter of his employer. His father-in-law encouraged his artistic abilities, supporting him financially, letting Brown pursue painting full-time. In 1866, he became one of the charter members of the Water-Color Society, of which he was president from 1887 to 1904. Brown became famous for his depictions of street urchins found of the streets of New York (bootblacks, street musicians, posy sellers, newsboys, etc.). Brown’s art is best characterized as British genre painting...

Born in Vienna in 1914, Robert Kasimir began drawing at age 4, taught by his grandfather Alois. He made his first etching at age 5. He graduated from Vienna schools and attended the Technological College before switching to the Academy for Graphic Art, where he studied under Professor Hans Frank, a painter and graphic artist. Robert inherited the talent of his famous parents. His technique and subject matter are quite similar to those of his father. He signed his early etchings with the pseudonym "F.O. Robert" until he became established as a successful artist in his own right. Only then did he begin signing his etchings with his own name. In 1936 he came to the United States for a year of study at the Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. During that year he made drawings for his American etchings, including the Capitol in Washington, Yale University, Broad Street, New York, and the University of California in Berkeley. He completed the actual etchings after his return to Vienna. In 1938 he was drafted into the army. He was sent to several fronts (Belgium, Holland, France, Russia) as a war reporter. He did many drawings during the war. In 1945 he returned to Vienna.
