.Job's Comforters. 'And When They Lifted Up Their Eyes Afar Off'. 'What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? '(Job ii: 10). 1823-25. Engraving. Image 7 11/16 x 5 7/8; plate 8 5/8 x 6 3/4; sheet 14 7/16 x 10 5/8. Series: Illustrations of The Book of Job, #7. From the first edition of 315 published by in 1826; printed ' TURKEY MILL 1925' wove drawing paper. A superb, richly-inked impression printed on the full sheet. Signed and dated in the plate. Housed in a 20 x 16-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. The text is from The Book of Job ii.12. 'And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent everyone his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.' (Job ii:12) 'Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord' (James v: 11). It is commonly called Job's Comforters and illustrates the verse: “And when they lifted up their eyes afar off & knew him not they lifted up their voice & wept, and rent every Man his mantle & sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven”. is plate comes immediately after the one which shows Job being tortured by a rash of boils. Here he lies exhausted and resigned, supported by his wife. The words in the top margin are from Job's reproof to his wife after she has said to him 'curse God, and die' because of the trials he has suffered. Job's comforters, Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar remain with him for seven days and nights.
