C. 1883

About the Item

c. 1883. Kakemono: 28 3/8 x 9 7/16. Repairs and staining; fine color. An extremely scarce historical image. Signed Chikanobu. Housed in a 36 x 15 1/2-inch archival mat, ready for your choice of frame. The Russo-Japanese War (10 February 1904 – 5 September 1905) or the Manchurian Campaign in some English sources, was a conflict that grew out of the rival imperialist ambitions of the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over Manchuria and Korea. The major theatres of operations were Southern Manchuria, specifically the area around the Liaodong Peninsula and Mukden, and the seas around Korea, Japan, and the Yellow Sea. After the Meiji restoration Hashimoto, or Yôshû, Chikanobu started studying with Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900), whose surname he took. His work is very similar to that of his teacher, yet (unlike his teacher) he specialized in historical subjects and especially prints of women and children.
