About the Item

Le Cliche is an original lithograph by Michel Pellus 1977. A delightful fantasy image of two woman side by side, one walking and one on a bicycle. They are walking away from the viewer on a floating orange path that leads up to a castle in the sky surrounded by clouds made up of round bubble like forms. In good condition a crease on the upper left top margin one inch above image. Limited edition 061/250 and signed in pencil by the artist in 1977. Michel Pellus (1945- ) born in Montreal is a self-taught artist specializing in oils and printmaking. His early works were characterized by humor, optimism and symbolism. Realistic figures were set in fantasy landscapes giving a sense of cosmic duality. Pellus has coined the term subjective realism to describe this style of painting. ” My work is a visual poem. I seek to capture a moment in time that particular moment- not the moment before, nor the moment after” Michel Pellus. From the realism of his early works, fantasy slowly emerged. Another quote from Pellus… ‘I was working on a painting [Le Cliché) of a kid looking out a window. I just tried to imagine how a kid might see the world outside.” That led to lemon-drop bushes, grape-colored clouds, and highways floating in midair, leading to castles in the clouds. In the late 1970s he lived in New York City’s SoHo before moving to remote Elizabeth Island in the Bahamas. In the late 1980s, he settled in South Florida where he works today. Michel Pellus’ paintings have been exhibited widely and can be found in many private and public collections, including the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and have been on display at the Louvre in Paris, France. His works have been featured in publications such as Florida Design Magazine, Art of the Times Magazine and The Palm Beach Post.

Assemblee des Rabbins et Notables au 16 siecle  dans un village de Lithuanie is an original artist proof ( E. A. ) lithograph by  Theo Tobiasse (b.1927 -2012) , an internationally successful French painter, engraver, illustrator, and sculptor. He grew up in Paris during the Nazi occupation. His work has great depth and originality as he seeks to express the inner world of man.  Perhaps the hardships he and his family endured helped define his artistic expression. He has had many exhibitions around the world, in Paris at the Drouant gallery, in Geneva, Montreal or Tokyo, then London, Zurich, Lauzanne, Los Angeles, Kyiv. He also had a solo exhibition in New York and many more shows world wide over the years.  A visit to Jerusalem in 1970 brought him closer to his Jewish origins. He created his first stained glass windows on the theme of “Jewish Holidays” for the Jewish Community Center in Nice and a monumental oil on canvas entitled Que tes tentes sont belles, ô Jacob (1982). He traveled and immersed himself in the cultures he encountered, the jazz of New Orleans, Mexican archaeological sites and Native American totems. In New York, he met Elie Wiesel...
