He was a friend and advocate of Henri Rousseau, along with Picasso. He exhibited at Stieglitz’s 291 Gallery. Weber’s work was admired and collected by the famous photographers, Alvin Langdon Coburn and Clarence White. Born in Russia, Weber settle in Brooklyn at age ten. Weber was a student of Arthur W. Dow and Henri Matisse. He frequented Gertrude Stein’s salon while living in Paris. “The American artist Max Weber was deeply influenced by non-Western art, including African masks that he viewed at Parisian museums and Japanese prints, which he learned about as a student. Around 1919, he began to combine these interests in a series of relief prints, such as the one seen here. Weber deconstructed the human figure into component parts, emphasizing its simplicity and geometry.” Courtesy of the Cleveland Museum of Art “In all of his woodcuts, Weber combined strong decorative motifs with vigorous cutting. His forms uniquely embraced and consolidated a concern for archaic imagery, African tradition, and the spirit and iconography of his Hebraic and eastern European heritage”. Rubenstein p. 60 The Spiral Press was founded by Joseph Blumenthal. Weber collaborated with Blumenthal on two books of woodcuts, Primitives (1926) and the Weyhe book, Woodcuts and Linoleum Blocks by Max Weber (1956). The latter volume was Weber looking backward to the formulation of his cubist principals and their inspirations. In 1956, the year of the publication of the Weyhe book of woodcuts, Weber won the Lippincott Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
