The rich blue color bursts from the page in Georges Braque Untitled (Fleur Tombe), 1962, overtaking the black lettering and white background. Drawn onto the title page of the book “Braque Le goût de notre temps” by Albert Skira this hand applied watercolor is striking. In several strong stokes, a flower is presented with its blue petals seeming to float down the page until almost reaching the bottom. The delicate blue touches the page which in turn lights up with brilliant flowers. The petals are slightly smudged, and you can see the brushstrokes that Braque applied to the page. PArt of what makes this unique watercolor so wonderful is that the viewer can so clearly see and feel the hand of the artist. Caught in between the flower and falling petals is the black hand...

Hand-coloured portrait of a regal monarch, immobilised in marble, her reigning celebrated the blooms she becomes entwined in. The characterisation is inspired by visual depictions of Lady Macbeth, in particular, John Singer Sargent’s 1889 portrait of actress Ellen Terry.
Taken from The Sialia Marbles, a series of portraits containing ephemeral human sculptures taken between 2016-19. Together these works act as tales contained in a fictional sculpture hall, in direct reaction to Andre Malraux’s 1947 Le Musee Imaginaire (Museum Without Walls).

Copper plate engraving with hand coloring on cream laid paper with the Arms of France watermark (a crown in shield topped by a fleur-de-lys and the letters GR), 22 3/4 x 15 3/4 inches (576 x 400 mm), wide to full margins. Multiple vertical and horizontal creases from folding and rolling; none appear to be particularly hard, there is however some associated cockeling. While there is some minor mat tone visible around the perimeter of the sheet, the extensive handcoloring remains extremely fresh and saturated in the intended areas. There are edge tears at each the right and left sheet edge (outside of the image area) due to an improper effort to mount the sheet to a mat. Otherwise in very good condition with all issues being consistent with age.

As a soldier in World War II, he survived where millions perished. Upon returning to his home town of Odessa, felt abandoned and alone. He studied Art and Architecture in Odessa, but, one of a number of Russian Jewish artists allowed to emigrate, he left for America when the opportunity arose. He settled in New York City, a choice that has forever impacted his oeuvre. Many of his pictures depict New York cityscapes and lifestyle; however, they remain typically Russian. His subject matter often comes from memory and includes the life that he left behind, family, and friends. Drawing upon his Jewish heritage for inspiration, Shenker also paints historical events, such as "On the Eve of the Assault" in which he portrayed the last night before the destruction of Jerusalem. He has also illustrated a number of classics of Russian literature including Alexander Pushkin. His use of imagination also applies to the figures in his expressionist paintings—fictional characters such as the Spanish literary character Don Quixote make appearances in his work. He has also placed figures such as Rembrandt and Picasso in modern settings: in "Rembrandt Visiting our Family," Shenker sits his most favored artist at his family table, in a tribute to someone he describes as a "peoples artist." Adhered to a card stock matrix with deckle edges, as issued. A beautiful pre-war impression of this serene and peaceful scene, good gradient inking and luminosity in the lantern. Printed by hand with cherrywood blocks.
