Howard Kanovitz
Andre: vintage 1970s champagne and wood grain still life, realist pop art style

1972

$1,800

About

This richly-hued screenprint depicts the ripped-open box packaging for Andre Champagne Cellars. On the side of the box is printed "Cold Duck," referring to the popular inexpensive sparkling wine made by Andre. At the base of the packaging, the wine's slogan reads: "Nice things happen with Andre." A piece torn off the box implies that the contents have been well-used. The box sits atop a dark wood-grain table. As a photo realist, Howard Kanovitz sought to challenge what is thought of as reality, rather than replicate it. Kanovitz reacted to the emotional punch of abstract expressionism with uncanny compositions and flat planes of color, suggesting a world of ambiguities between the seen and unseen. Of the artist, Chuck Close said: “His influence was that he made working from photographs seem like a good idea.” Paper 35.5 x 27.25 in. / 90 x 69 cm Image 31.5 x 23 in. / 80 x 58.5 cm Silkscreen on white paper. Edition 100: this impression 40/100. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil, numbered 40/100 lower left. A copy of this print is in the collection of the Arts Council Collection, London.
