About

HONORE DAUMIER (1808 - 1871) AH! HIS!.......(Heave Ho..) (DR. 47, LD47, HD 252). Listed as RARE. Lithograph as published in Le Caricature July 19, 1832. 10 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches. Good sized sheet some minor discoloration along the outside of sheet. Collectors stamp lower right corner. Early signature - Honore- in the stone lower left. Aside from the slightly phallic nature... Below is the explanation from the Daumier-Register available on line: The print shows the hoisting of the pear in effigy. The word in French, meaning pear as well as fat head and fool. Louis-Philippe is shown here as a pear. This lithograph appeared without any text, just with the name of the publication La Caricature on top. The symbol of a pear was first used by the founder of La Caricature, Charles Philipon, in 1831 and served as a persiflage against Louis-Philippe. His general appearance reminded of the shape of a pear. It soon became the popular common symbol of the king. By using this symbol, it was possible to avoid suppression of publication by the censor for a certain time. It appeared in circulars, pamphlets, and on posters and street walls. It had also been used by Daumier's colleagues Traviès and Grandville to the great joy of the readers. In court, when charged with insulting the king, he requested to be allowed to draw a series of four pears. They showed progressively the head and face of the king. Philipon asked - Is resemblance a crime. He was acquitted. In order to avoid problems with the censor, this print appeared without a text. Delteil used the text “Ah His”, which was shown apart from the actual lithograph in the Caricature, to better identify the print. A similar subject of “hanging” was used by Daumier in DR 92.
