With the light burnishing at the top of the slab. 8 1/2 x 5 7/8 inches. A little scattered foxing. Minor ripples along left and right sheet edges. Full Sheet 11 3/8 x 7 5/8 inches. Binding evidence at left and gold on right sheet edge From the Museo del Prado: Print corresponding to the thematic group "fortune and death", and has as starting point the previous prints, more critical towards superstition that go from the Caprices 44 to the 58, and the more carefree that goes next. The picture expresses with unsurpassed drama the contest between Enlightenment and reaction that consumed much of the energy of eighteenth-century Spain. The enormous slab that gravitates over the terrified cabal can not symbolize anything other than the weight of history and human progress that has to bury ignorance, superstition and obscurantism. The incipient dawn of dawn announces in the Goya print that the advent of the lights is immediate, and that the titanic efforts of the children of darkness are already rendered useless. Rarely, Goya's optimism and hope in human progress will be so evident. The year of 1799 is one of the key moments in the life and work of Francisco de Goya. In addition to being appointed first chamber painter, enjoying a growing prestige as a portraitist and inaugurating the hermitage of San Antonio de la Florida that he had decorated, on February 6 was published in the Diario de Madrid the announcement of the implementation of the sale of the eighty prints that make up the Caprichos series. This marks the culmination of an intense period in the life of the painter, which had begun in 1792, when as a result of illness he convalesced in the Cádiz residence of Sebastián Martínez, where he could contemplate English satirical prints that would later influence his work. Upon his return to Madrid he cultivated the friendship of Leandro Fernández de Moratín, with whom he had to exchange ideas that would later be present in the Caprichos
