STEAM AIRLINER is an original wood engraving by the American artist Bernard Brussel-Smith, hand printed in black ink on cream color woven laid Whitechurch paper(watermark visible). STEAM AIRLINER depicts a wacky early flying machine comprised of multiple propellers, rudders, mast and fin-like structures, a smokestack in the center billowing cloud of steam as the crew of men in black top hats standby. STEAM AIRLINER is a wildly imaginative example of aviation history all meticulously engraved by the master woodcut artist - Bernard Brussel-Smith.

Bernard Brussel-Smith (1914-1989) was a well-known 20th Century artist and illustrator, specializing in the medium of wood engraving. He was born, raised, and lived most of his life in New York City, a constant source of imagery for the artist from Depression-era 40's, and the post-war 50s until his death. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the New School for Social Research, New York and later taught art at the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Union, City College, and the National Academy. Brussel-Smith was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy in 1952, and a full Member in 1973. His work is included in various public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and Carnegie Institute.
