About
Vanitas is an amazing drypoint realized by the French painter, illustrator, and writer Amandine Doré in the second half of the 20th century.
The state of preservation is excellent, except for some light folds on the lower left margin of the paper and some pencil marks, probably aiming at typographical choices for the illustration. The image is sensual, interesting, and pleasant, despite the topic, among the most ancient ever represented in painting: the Memento Mori, dealt by the artist with remarkable irony.
Amandine Doré (Paris, 1912-2011) is one of the pseudonyms of Odette Amandine Bonne, who signed also as “Aurèa” or “Madame”, according to the type of subject matter of her artworks.
Amandine was a French painter, illustrator, and writer. Her production varied from erotic to travel illustrations. With her fascinating drawings, she illustrated the classics of erotic literature, books of poetry, magazines, and most of her husband’s books (the Belgian author T’Serstevens, with whom she often travelled).
