Printdrawing by Cornelis Ploos van Amstel, on laid paper. A printdrawing is a work of art made to simulate a drawing, using a combination of graphical techniques including roulette, mezzotint, crayon / stipple engraving, etching and aquatint etching. State: Fourth state of 4. Ref: LNP 17 The largest and most famous print from the Ploos van Amstel set of reproductions of Dutch masters in printdrawing. Made by 'Cornelis Ploos van Amstel' after 'Adriaen van Ostade'. Cornelis Ploos van Amstel (1726-1798) was active as merchant in Amsterdam. He was an avid collector of art and invented a method of making prints after drawings from his own collection. Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1685) was born in Haarlem and trained with Frans Hals. He remained in this city for the rest of his life and died here in 1685. Very influential artist, who had pupils like Cornelis Bega, Cornelis Dusart and Jan Steen. His etched work consists of 50 prints, all with genre subject matter.
