About

Barbara Kruger Franklin Furnace Fights for First Amendment Rights Poster 1990 Red, black, and white poster, featuring a classic Kruger title that reads, "Franklin Furnace Fights for First Amendment Rights"; image features small child in bottom left corner gripping a statue of a man with his tongue sticking out. Illustrated by Kruger in conjunction with a 1990 benefit held at New York's, The Public Theater. Rare. Off-set lithograph on smooth wove paper 28 x 22 inches Scattered minor signs of handling; otherwise good to very good vintage condition. Rare; from an edition of unknown. Further Background "In Franklin Furnace Fights for First Amendment Rights (1990), the artist community addresses the political climate of the arts during the culture wars in the United States. The presenters confront the heightened censorship of queer, erotic, and feminist art, as well as conservative agendas projected onto the artistic landscape. This event was prompted by the recent closure of Franklin Furnace by the New York Fire Department for mistakenly being an illegal social club, despite the organization’s growing recognition as a preeminent avant-garde gallery. Following the closure, Franklin Furnace was demonized by Republican Senator Jesse Helms for presenting Karen Finley's A Woman's Life Isn't Worth Much (1990), which led to audits by the Internal Revenue Service and rescinded grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Featured presenters include Spalding Gray, Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, Eric Bogosian, Cee Brown, Allen Ginsberg, Diane Torr, Paul McMahon, Nancy Spero, Leon Golub, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Annie Sprinkle, Frank Maya, Lynne Tillman, and Karen Finley." (source: Hemispheric Institute) More on Barbara Kruger Best known for laying aggressively directive slogans over black-and-white photographs that she finds in magazines, Barbara Kruger developed a visual language that was strongly influenced by her early work as a graphic designer (at magazines including House and Garden, Mademoiselle, and Aperture). Among her most famous pieces are I shop, therefore I am (1987) and Your body is a battleground (1985). Informed by feminism, Kruger's work critiques consumerism and desire, and has appeared on billboards, bus cards, posters and in public parks, train station platforms, and other public spaces. She has also created site-specific installations comprised of video, film, audio, and projection. (source: Artsy) Related Categories Feminist artist. Feminism.
