About
Special end of the year offer. This lovely and very decorative print is an ideal gift for you or your loved-ones.
Rare antique print depicting a carnation and a moth metamorphosis. Caryophillus purpureus, in French "Œillet pourpré" meaning "Purple Carnation". This print originates from 'Histoire des insectes de l’Europe' by Maria Sibylla Merian, published in 1771 by Desnos in Paris.
The framed work measures 36 on 32 cms (incl. frame).
Maria Sybil Merian was a remarkable female artist, she was the daughter of the German engraver Matthias Merian and became a very talented and renowned artist in her own right. While living in the Netherlands in the 1650s, she became so fascinated by the beetles and butterflies that were brought there from the East- and West-Indies that she wanted to travel to Suriname to see and study them in their natural habitat. In order to be able to travel there, she sold 255 of her own paintings. The voyage proved to be a worthwhile endeavour as, upon her return, she published a book on her findings and observations of the plant life she encountered there.
