About
Antique engraving on laid paper uses dramatic perspective to highlight a series of fish and marine creature set against a fantastical, elaborate seascape; a galleon ship sails off the coast of a medieval town set within an exaggeratedly steep hills. This late 16th to early 17th century image drawn and engraved by Adriaen Collaert is from "Piscium Vivae Icones," a series of plates illustrating fish and other marine life published c. 1580-1610. Each creature is identified by its Latin name: Frater Hugo, Leo marinus, Sarda, Cuculus.
Adriaen Collaert was part of a family of Dutch engravers from Antwerp known for the high quality of their work. They engraved many religious works as well as mythological and landscape images and illustrations of birds and fish in their natural environment.
Measurements listed are image size only, does not include paper margins.
