ALEXANDER POPE (1849-1924)
Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States
20 Chromolithographs, 14” x 20” Unframed
Scribner’s Sons, New York
1877-78
Alexander Pope was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1849. As he he grew up his interests and talents both matured in painting, wood carving and sculpture. The lure of nature led him to combine his abilities to better create a realistic image. He is said to be the first man to paint game birds carved from wood. Two of his painted carvings were purchased by the Czar of Russia.
Although he was primarily self-taught, Pope did receive some instruction from sculpturist William Copely. However just honing his technical skill was not enough. He turned to a physician, Dr. Rimmer, to study the finer points of anatomy and perspective. By frequenting the many stables, aviaries and kennels in his area, Pope was able to develop a sharp eye for the anatomical nuances of the animals he would later turn into paintings. Pope also spent many hours studying animals in the zoological gardens of New York and Philadelphia and in the winter headquarters of the Barnum circus.
Alexander Pope's most popular collection is the beautiful chromolithograph series titled Upland Game Birds and Water Fowl of the United States, Pope's tremendous ability for capturing the realism and beauty of nature's creatures has won him the title of the "American Landseer".

He stands stolidly, holding out his left hand for the notes, his right hand in his coat pocket. Fox (right) wears a high cocked hat...Category
