About

This dynamic and striking work was realized by the celebrated American artist Worden Day in 1951. This abstract woodblock print presents an ovoid form- executed in a light indigo hue- embedded with a panoply of interior structures suggesting ancient carvings. This central form filled with intertwined abstract elements in white and cobalt pigment appears against a brick red background. Executed in 1951, Day's foray into abstraction appears well ahead of her time. She appears as one of the great unheralded artists of her generation, who decidedly did not receive the attention that she deserved. This piece represents an exceptional example of her practice. It comes presented in a custom pickled oak frame and is in excellent condition. It is inscribed "Turmuli 14/21 Imp Worden Day 51". Day was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1912. She graduated from Randolph-Macon College in 1934, before enrolling at the Art Students League of New York. Day was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in both 1952 and 1961. Her work is included in many important museum collections including The National Gallery in Washington D.C. and the New York MoMA.
