About
Overlapping forms in aqua and green are suggestive of underwater life in this unique "autographic print" by the renowned member of Painters 11 Harold Town. The Painters 11 (the "wild ones of Canadian art) included Jack Bush, William Ronald, Walter Yarwood, Alexandra Luke, Oscar Cahen and Kazuko Nakamura.
During the 1950s, Town developed a novel method of producing monoprints that he called "single autographic prints." Using lithography and inked cut outs and stencils he worked on several prints at once over a period of days. The autographic prints comprised his first significant body of work, and two of them are in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Between 1946 and 1986, Town's work was in shown in 370 exhibitions in North America and Europe.
